CT Legislators unveiled new gun-control measures.

A ban on large-capacity ammunition magazines, a new registry for existing high-capacity magazines and background checks for private gun sales are among the highlights of proposed legislation being unveiled to rank-and-file Connecticut legislators.

The lawmakers spent much of Monday afternoon in closed-door meetings, being briefed on the details of a bipartisan framework negotiated for weeks by legislative leaders.

Some parents of the 20 first graders killed Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown traveled to the state Capitol on Monday, hoping to persuade the legislators to consider an out-right ban on high-capacity  magazines, arguing that lawmakers were instead creating a loophole by grandfathering existing ones.

New Haven Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield, a gun control proponent, said the package would still be one of the toughest in the country.
