WFUV at the Fordham Men's Basketball Tip-Off Dinner

Fordham Men's Basketball starts its season in style, and the inaugural Johnny Bach Award goes to a Knicks legend

On Monday, November 6th, The Fordham Rams held their 2012-2013 Men’s Basketball Tip-Off dinner at the Grand Hyatt in Manhattan. It was an opportunity to introduce this year’s basketball roster to the Fordham Athletic family and Alumni, and a chance for the program to give out the inaugural Johnny Bach Award.

Among the many guests on hand for this special night were Fordham University President, the Reverend Joseph McShane, S.J., Athletic Director David Roach, Women’s Basketball Head Coach Stephanie Gaitley, and many other members of the Rams Athletic Staff. A number of alumni were in attendance, including Johnny Bach who is one of the most legendary coaches in Rams basketball history.

Bach is widely considered one of the best minds to ever be a part of the game of basketball. He was the defensive mind that helped the Chicago Bulls to win three straight NBA titles. Bach also found success coaching at the collegiate level, as he is also the winningest coach in Fordham University basketball history, compiling 263 victories, five NIT appearances and two NCAA berths in 18 years with the Rams.

Bach was in attendance to give out the inaugural Johnny Bach Award. This Award will be presented annually to the individual who has had substantial and lasting impact on the sport of basketball and who best emulates Mr. Bach's drive and passion for excellence.

The Johnny Bach Award was presented to 11-time NBA All-Star and New York Knicks Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing. He was the cornerstone of some of the best teams in Knicks history, and has been named one of the Top 50 players in the history of the NBA. Ewing, a proud Fordham parent of Randi Ewing of the Rams volleyball team, brought along another Georgetown Hoya, Dikembe Mutombo, for support.

It was an evening to remember, and you can hear the ceremony in its entirety below, along with the interviews conducted by Mack Rosenberg and myself, which feature Ewing, Mutombo, Father McShane, Roach and Rams Head Coach Tom Pecora.
