Getting New Yorkers on the Same Page

It's no fiction that New Yorkers love books.

The city is home to some of the country's biggest booksellers and one of the world's largest library systems. And now, the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment has teamed up with BuzzFeed to promote a new program called "One Book, One New York." The initiative will give residents a chance to vote on which book the entire city should read at the same time.

Voters can choose from "Americanah" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, "Between the World and Me" by Ta-Nehisi Coates, "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Díaz, "The Sellout" by Paul Beatty and "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith.

Julie Menin, commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, said this selection is appropriate for today's political climate.

"These five books all have different themes focused on immigration or race or inclusion," she said. "So we think this is an incredibly timely moment for people to be reading and discussing these particular books."

Voting will take place throughout the month of February at http://www1.nyc.gov/site/mome/initiatives/1book1ny.page.
