On any given night, restaurants in New York throw out 150 thousand pounds of produce and other foods that never get served. That's where City Harvest steps in -- and they've been at it for quite some time.

Founded in 1982, City Harvest is the nation's first organization to specialize in "food rescue."

"It's when a farmer overproduces and he has all these leftover carrots," explains Jenique Jones, the Associate Director of City Harvest. "or a restaurant is cleaning out its freezer and has all these meats. This is not bad food."

Once the food is donated, Jones helps City Harvest find food banks, homeless shelters, and other places that could use the food. The food is then delivered on trucks. Jones says they didn't always have that luxury.

"I think technology has enhanced," Jones said. "We do it with many trucks now as opposed to two guys in a van."

City Harvest also has a large warehouse located in Long Island City. There, the trucks drop off the food so it can be sorted, repackaged, and delivered. This year alone, City Harvest is set to deliver more than 50 million pounds of food.
