2019 is just beginning, but New York City officials are preparing for a major 2020 event.

Mayor Bill DeBlasio named Julie Menin the city's 2020 Census director. Menin will have $5.5 million to get an accurate count of New York City's population.

Menin says her goal is to avoid under counting New Yorkers and to reassure undocumented people they won't be punished for participating.

She says under counting New Yorkers could hurt funding for education and other needs.

"We are going to reach all New Yorkers," Menin said.

Menin previously served as commissioner of the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment.
