Rhiannon Giddens - FUV Live - 2015

by Rita Houston
You may know Rhiannon Giddens as one of the founding members of the Grammy Award-winning band, The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Earlier this month, Giddens released her solo debut, Tomorrow Is My Turn. The album, produced by T-Bone Burnett, offers a feminist perspective of the American roots canon with lyrical and sonic influences spanning from Nina Simone to Patsy Cline.

Good Morning! Paul for Corny to round off the week.

On this February 25th--Here Comes The George.

Let's celebrate The Quiet Beatle's birthday on Question Of The Day (just past 9AM) with a dip into his rich songbook--but performed by others.

Here's what we played:

Richie Havens - "Here Comes the Sun"

Billy Preston - "My Sweet Lord"

Leon Russell - "Beware of Darkness"

Frank Sinatra - "Something"

"Rock Me to Sleep" Jill Sobule

"I Go to Sleep" The Pretenders

"Sleep" Allen Stone

Gavin James - FUV Live - 2015

by Rita Houston

Dubliner Gavin James makes his American radio debut with this session. I was instantly taken by his solid and natural vocals and was not surprised to learn he has been busking since a teenager in Dublin. It's no surprise that his first domestic release is a solo live recording from the legendary Whelan's in Dublin.  It seems there is no music fan he can't win over if you just give him a chance. His songwriting chops are developing but interestingly his profile is rising thanks to a cover that might surprise you.
