New Music Monday With Old Friends

by Quinn Harris

New Music Monday is a collection of the best new releases in music each week. We share them with you every Monday, every hour on WFUV.

John Fogerty - "Mystic Highway"

John Fogerty's "Mystic Highway" is a track from his newest record titled Wrote A Song For EveryoneThe song can be placed into one of my favorite "genres" of music, which I call "Aging music legends reminiscing on their long careers." The category has produced some truly great songs, from Solomon Burke to Kris Kristofferson; Randy Newman in 2008 to Warren Zevon breaking our hearts on his final album; even Charles Bukowski fits the bill with one of his final poems. On "Mystic Highway," Fogerty doesn't miss a beat from his Creedence Clearwater Revival days and we think it's one of his most thoughtful performances yet. It's a rollicking ode to his career, and on it Fogerty sings with a smirk, "This old road has been my lifeline/my companion and my friend/like a rope around the universe/ain't no beginning, ain't no end."

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band - "Dear Lord (Give Me the Strength)"

"Dear Lord (Give Me the Strength)" is a track from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band's new album titled, That's It! It's the first album of their 50 years in the business made up entirely of original music and their 21st album altogether. Band member Ben Jaffe remarked that it's a New Orleans funeral type song, where "everybody's dancing and rejoicing." We here are rejoicing at the promise of a new Preservation Hall album. That's It! comes out July 9th and it can't come soon enough.

Neko Case- "Man"

"Man" is a track from Neko Case's new album, The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You out September 3rd. It reminds us of Fiona Apple's most recent album title, and we hope it will be abridged to something like The Worse Things Get, because it's currently a little too breathtaking. "Man" features M. Ward (of She & Him) on guitar and is a freewheeling, Southern rock jam that might be some of the best music of Case's career to date.

Divine Fits - "Chained To Love/Ain't That the Way"

Divine Fits are an indie "supergroup" of Britt Daniel (Spoon), Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks), and Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade & Handsome Furs). The group recently release two new tracks that we're really enjoying here at WFUV. They've only made one record so far (2012's A Thing Called Divine Fits) so we were extremely excited when we heard the news of new music. Both songs are upbeat, fun tracks sure to be enjoyed by almost anyone.

Sigur Ros - Kveikur

Sigur Ros is without a doubt one of the most popular Icelandic bands ever (even though we can't think of any other than Bjork). While traditional Icelandic folk music took the form of humorous songs about sailors, winter, elves, and trolls,  the folk music of Sigur Ros is far from humorous. Instead, the band boasts sprawling, cinematic tunes paired with beautifully hushed melodies. Their newest album, Kveikur, is a slightly different take on the Sigur Ros of old. Here, the band finds themselves in a "more agressive" tone than before, but that doesn't mean it isn't an enjoyable listen through and through. Trust us, it is.
