New Regulations to Protect Transgender New Yorkers

New regulations to protect transgender New Yorkers came into effect this week.

Governor Cuomo announced the changes in October. From now on it will be illegal to discriminate against people on the grounds of their gender identity in New York.

Natalia Aristizabal is the Lead Organizer of the advocacy group Make the Road New York. She said in the past, her members have been fired by their bosses while in the midst of transitioning to another gender.

"Everyone should be able to have a job, or enter a store, or ask for a service and not be discriminated because of the gender they're expressing," Aristizabal said.

People who discriminate against transgender New Yorkers can be fined up to $100,000.
