New Yorkers Like Big Dogs
According to the American Kennel Club’s top ten most popular dog breeds in 2012, the Labrador Retriever is a New York City favorite.
The Lab replaces the Yorkshire Terrier as the most popular breed. The Yorkie slipped to the 5th spot after holding the number one spot from 2009-2011.
Kennel Club Spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said it is wrong to think you cannot own a big dog in the city.
“A lot of people think you can’t own a breed like a Labrador Retriever in a large city if you have a smaller living space, but actually responsible owners are great at making sure the dog's needs are met. You can go to the local dog run to exercise and play with your dog,” Peterson said.
The Labrador Retriever also ranks in as the nation's most popular dog for the 22nd straight year.
“With people being more active, more health conscious than ever, going out walking, running, hiking; being active a lot of these larger breeds are built to do things like hearding, sporting and running. I think that’s part of the popularity as well,” Peterson said.
