Tonight's UKNY at 11 is dedicated and devoted entirely to the music and the resilient people of the greater Manchester area.  In the aftermath of the vile and vicious bombing on Monday night, the city's grief is the world's grief, as residents of New York, Paris, Sana'a, Brussels, Istanbul, London, Minya, Baghdad and far too many other towns and cities sadly understand.

As New Yorkers experienced after 9/11, Mancunians' communal spirit and innate courage has been their ballast this terrible week. Manchester is a culturally, religiously and racially diverse metropolis that takes pride in its hard-working, industrious legacy (the symbol of the worker bee buzzes through its architecture and streets), its artistry, literature and sport, the global impact of its music, its Northern moxie, and that rich, rolling Manc dialect.

So tonight, an hour's worth of of Mancunian music, poetry and more, from New Order, Johnny Marr, Elbow, PINS, Bipolar Sunshine, Pale Waves and many others, sending love and support.

To quote the poet Tony Walsh, who read his stirring ode to Manchester, "This is the Place," at the Albert Square vigil on Tuesday night:

And so this is the place now with kids of our own.
Some are born here, some drawn here, but they all call it home.
And they’ve covered the cobbles, but they’ll never defeat, all the dreamers and schemers who still teem through these streets.
Because this is a place that has been through some hard times: oppressions, recessions, depressions, and dark times.
But we keep fighting back with Greater Manchester spirit. Northern grit, Northern wit, and Greater Manchester’s lyrics.
