Trash bags heaped outside a Manhattan building after last week's blizzard helped save the life of a troubled man authorities say jumped from his ninth-floor apartment.

Fire officials say the 26-year-old man was taken to Bellevue Hospital shortly after noon on Saturday. He was listed in critical but stable condition.

The man was identified by an aunt as Vangelis Kapatos. Katharina Kapatos told "The New York Post" that her nephew recently told her he was worried about being evicted from his rent-stabilized apartment.

The city resumed garbage pickup for the first time since the storm on Monday.
